Q: What is a Combined Sewer?
A: A combined sewer is a sewer that is designed to convey both stormwater and sanitary sewer. During dry weather, sanitary sewage alone is conveyed to the treatment plant. During wet weather, a mixture of stormwater and sanitary sewage is conveyed to the treatment plant.

Q: What are CSOs and SSOs?
A: A Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) results when a wastewater collection system, by design, conveys both sanitary sewage and stormwater by way of an overflow to the waters of the state when that collection system becomes overloaded, which can occur during periods of wet weather. A Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) results when a wastewater collection system, by design, includes sewage, but incidentally includes stormwater-related inflow and infiltration (I&I) and discharges to state waters.

Q: How many CSO and SSO locations exist in our area?
A: Eight CSO outfalls are located within our watershed; six in the City of New Kensington and two in the City of Arnold.
